The UA Dance program will host a virtual concert season for academic year 2020/2021 featuring faculty, guest artist, and student choreography created for and translated to the screen. This pivot will not only help us to follow University guidelines for safety but will also serve our pedagogical goal of training dance artists for the 21st Century.

The following vocabulary is meant to help describe the range of approaches that will be used in creating our virtual season. The A, B, C vocabulary below is meant to clarify without limiting possibilities.

Virtual Performance:  Any online event, live or recorded, curated and programmed in place of a live, in-person performance

A) Documentation:  The representation on screen of a work created for live performance.  This is often shot with a clear “front,” as if the viewer has an excellent seat in a theatre. This is an example of documentation.

B) Adaptation:  A work originally created for the stage altered for representation on screen.  These are often shot somewhere other than a stage and may be less frontal.  This is an example of an adaptation.

C) Screendance:  Dance art conceived for representation on screen.  A full and equal integration of choreographic and cinematic values. Term came into use in the early 2000’s – covers film, video, and any other media that will develop to represent dance on a screen.  Privileges the mode of delivery (screen) rather than the recording medium. This is an example of a screendance.

We envision our dance season this fall to consist of the following virtual performance formats:

Virtual ARDT:  B, C & hybrids
Virtual DA:  A, B, C & hybrids
Virtual MFA concert:  C & hybrids
